It's a familiar tale: boy meets girl, girl has cats, boy loves girl, NOT cats. The union occurs and flourishes in spite of trials and tribulations with — you guessed it — the litter box! Laurie, a successful interior designer and space planner, dreams up a concept to solve the odor, dust, and gritty floor problems that plague every household with a cat and a litter box. "Put the thing in the garage, but in some sort of enclosure so the little darlings can't hide out or escape when you raise the garage door — can a pet door go in a wall?" Eager to pursue a practical alternative to the failed parade of electronic gizmos, countless varieties of scoopable, flushable, compostable litters, air fresheners, dust busters, and walk-off mats, Mark (who by now at least likes cats), in a "Eureka!" moment, designs Litter-Garage.
An accomplished remodeling contractor, Mark developed the thru-the-wall chute to accommodate the typical range of wall thicknesses. A sturdy support tray designed to hold an extra-large covered litter box was mounted on the garage wall. On the inside wall, a deluxe cat door was installed and connected to the litter box via the chute. The chute locks into the litter box opening, allowing the tracked-out litter to fall back into the box. The two cats for whom the prototype was created, Java and Marina, adapted within one day to the new litter box environment and quickly learned how to take turns by looking through the clear plastic flap to see if the facilities were occupied.
As cat-owning friends and clients began testing our prototypes, we were encouraged to make the product widely available. Anyone with an attached garage and a cat will be as happy as we were to conquer litter box liability forever.
No more worries about toddlers playing in the 'sand', and the horror stories we were told about what some dogs like to do when they share the rent with a cat — Yuck!
